Antarctica Ice melt bigger than 1,000 years!
CANBERRA (Reuters) - The summer ice melt in parts of Antarctica is at its highest level in 1,000 years, Australian and British researchers reported on Monday, adding new evidence of the impact of global warming on sensitive Antarctic glaciers and ice shelves.
Researchers from the Australian National University and the British Antarctic Survey found data taken from an ice core also shows the summer ice melt has been 10 times more intense over the past 50 years compared with 600 years ago.
"It's definitely evidence that the climate and the environment is changing in this part of Antarctica," lead researcher Nerilie Abram said.
Abram and her team drilled a 364-metre (400-yard) deep ice core on James Ross Island, near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, to measure historical temperatures and compare them with summer ice melt levels in the area.
They found that, while the temperatures have gradually increased by 1.6 degrees Celsius (2.9 degrees Fahrenheit) over 600 years, the rate of ice melting has been most intense over the past 50 years.
That shows the ice melt can increase dramatically in climate terms once temperatures hit a tipping point.

Scientists at the British Antarctic Survey have been working with a host of international collaborators to present the most detailed map yet of Antarctica’s landmass. Bedmap2 reveals a landscape of mountain ranges and plains cut by gorges and valleys much deeper than previously seen.
In addition, the map allows scientists to analyse, in much greater detail, the bed below the Antarctic ice sheet.

Several features of the bed have been revealed for the first time including a new deepest point. The bed under the Byrd Glacier in Victoria Land is 2,870 metres below sea level making it the lowest point on any of the Earth’s continental plates.
The map was compiled using datasets collected from radio echo sounding measurements, seismic techniques, satellite readings and cartographic data.
A number of key statistics emerge;
The volume of ice in Antarctica is 4.6% greater than previously thought
The mean bed depth of Antarctica, at 95 metres, is 60 m lower than estimated
The volume of ice that is grounded with a bed below sea level is 23% greater than originally thought meaning there is a larger volume of ice that is susceptible to rapid melting. The ice that rests just below sea level is vulnerable to warming from ocean currents
The total potential contribution to global sea level rise from Antarctica is 58 metres, similar to previous estimates but a much more accurate measurement
The new deepest point, under Byrd Glacier, is around 400 metres deeper than the previously identified deepest point
Peter Fretwell, from the British Antarctic Survey, says:
"The new Bedmap shows, with unprecedented detail, the bedrock beneath the ice sheets of Antarctica. Before we had a regional overview of the topography, but this new map, with its much higher resolution, shows the landscape itself; a complex landscape of mountains, hills and rolling plains, dissected by valleys troughs and deep gorges."
Dr Hamish Pritchard, co-lead author of the study, says:
“The Bedmap2 project is about more than making a map of the landscape. The data we've put together on the height and thickness of the ice and the shape of the landscape below are fundamental to modelling the behaviour of the ice sheet in the future. This matters because in some places, ice along the edges of Antarctica is being lost rapidly to the sea, driving up sea level. Knowing how much the sea will rise is of global importance, and these maps are a step towards that goal."
NASA Satellites Find Freshwater Losses in Middle East
A new study using data from a pair of gravity-measuring NASA satellites finds that large parts of the arid Middle East region lost freshwater reserves rapidly during the past decade.
Scientists at the University of California, Irvine; NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.; and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., found during a seven-year period beginning in 2003 that parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran along the Tigris and Euphrates river basins lost 117 million acre feet (144 cubic kilometers) of total stored freshwater. That is almost the amount of water in the Dead Sea. The researchers attribute about 60 percent of the loss to pumping of groundwater from underground reservoirs.
The findings, to be published Friday, Feb. 15, in the journal Water Resources Research, are the result of one of the first comprehensive hydrological assessments of the entire Tigris-Euphrates-Western Iran region. Because obtaining ground-based data in the area is difficult, satellite data, such as those from NASA's twin Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites, are essential. GRACE is providing a global picture of water storage trends and is invaluable when hydrologic observations are not routinely collected or shared beyond political boundaries.
...simply already there are Island Countries in problems and needing to move out, with the Sea levels rising...!
WHEN WILL SOMEBODY BE BLAMED OTHER THEN "NATURE"...???
WHY WOULD THE UK DO THIS REPORT of 1,000 years range with ice core drilling, etc., AND NOT USA AND NASA, that only talk of 20 years range of more ice melt...???
I forgot fresh water supplies are political data...! Hence populations are not as important as Governments...!
For the fun of it, check out where more than a constant 50cm of water Sea Level Rise might affect you...!
http://geology.com/sea-level-rise/ ; select your area and zoom in, using different depths!
HAS ANYBODY OF GOV.CA [CANADA][CAÑADA][KANADA] noticed what barely 1m to 2m Ocean Rise would do to the West Coast of Canada ??? Half of Vancouver Gone...! ! !
AND THEY ARE LEAVING KYOTO AND GOING ALL FOR THE TAR SANDS...! ONE OF the Worlds biggest Heavy Crude deposits...!!!
IN PURE LOGIC, I WOULD STOP all combustion and CO2 emissions and vehicles, Jets, Boats, now...! Only go all electric...!
